MUMBAI: Broadcaster Star India and direct to home (DTH) operator Dish TV buried their hatchet and agreed to enter into a negotiated deal by the end of this month.

Star had issued disconnection notices to DTH operators Dish TV and Videocon d2h on 20 March for non-signing of agreements after the negotiations between the two parties had failed.

Even before the disconnection date became effective, the broadcaster had moved Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) seeking directions for Dish TV to do a reference interconnect offer (RIO) deal.

The petition was filed on 2 April and on 10 April the two parties submitted before the tribunal that they have settled the matter and have agreed to sign a fresh deal.

“From the submission of learned counsel for the parties, it appears that matter has been settled outside the Court and the agreement is likely to be signed by the end of this month,” the TDSAT said in a brief order.

The matter has been posted under the same head on 1 May.

The fresh deal between Star and Dish TV will also include Videocon d2h as the two companies have merged with effect from 22 March.

According to a source, the broadcaster has been signing one-year fixed fee deals with distribution platforms which the includes the hike on account of Indian Premier League (IPL).

Earlier, the broadcaster had reached an agreement with DTH operator Bharti Telemedia after weeks of bitter public spat.

“Airtel Digital subscribers will continue to get uninterrupted access to all of Star’s programmes including Vivo IPL, following an agreement reached between Star and Airtel. Both parties would like to assure their subscribers that the two companies are committed to bringing more and more high-quality content and experience to their consumers,” the two parties had said in a joint statement.

Star had paid a whopping Rs 16,347.5 crore to secure the IPL media rights till 2022. The broadcaster is looking to unlock IPL value through ad as well as distribution revenue.

The addition of IPL and the recent retention of India cricket media rights for Rs 6138.1 crore till 2023 has ensured that Star remains the home of Indian cricket. It also rights to International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asia Cup events in addition to New Zealand and Bangladesh cricket boards.

The broadcaster is using the power of sports to garner more subscription revenue.
