General News Reliance Jio to launch home broadband service by Diwali

MUMBAI: There is much more coming from Mukesh Ambani-controlled Reliance Jio Infocomm to disrupt the telecom and cable TV broadband market.

Reliance Jio is ready to launch its home broadband service, JioFiber, by Diwali this year. The pricing is going to be as low as Rs 500 for 100GB of data.

“Reliance Jio Fiber to offer 100GB data for Rs 500 in 100 cities by Diwali and speed 1Gbps,” tweeted Isha Ambani, company’s board director and daughter of Mukesh Ambani.

Diwali falls on 19 October this year.

The launch of Jio’s home broadband service will upset the market further, media anaysts said. Jio’s price aggression has already disturbed the mobile segment of the market.

In the home broadband segment, India has less than 20 million wireline broadband users. State-run BSNL dominates the market with a close to 50% market share.

Last month, Reliance Jio announced the launch of a new smartphone, the JioPhone, along with a Jio Phone TV cable, which will allow users to access the 4G service provider’s digital media services like Jio TV and Jio Cinema on their TV screens, thus intending to disrupt the cable TV and direct-to-home (DTH) markets. JioPhone will be available at virtually no cost barring a one-time refundable security deposit of Rs 1,500.

The JioPhone will be available for user testing in beta from 15 August and for pre-booking from 24 August. The smartphone will be physically available to those who have pre-booked, on a first-come, first-served basis, from September.

With JioPhone, Mukesh Ambani’s target is the 50 crore feature phone users who do not even have access to basic internet and apps.

Jio has over 100 million subscribers. In just six months of Jio’s launch, data consumption in India went from 20 crore GB to 120 crore GB per month.
