New Intelsat headend in the sky for Jain TV Group
Jain TV Group's Noida Software Technology Park (NSTPL) has picked Intelsat to provide satellite capacity for a new Indian digital cable television distribution platform, otherwise known as a 'headend in the sky' (HITS).

A multi-year, multi-transponder deal for C-band capacity on Intelsat 902 satellite, located in orbit at 63 degrees East, will enable NSTPL to create a channel package for distribution by multi system operators (MSOs) and local cable operators throughout the country.

"NSTPL is proud of its association with Intelsat and excited that our HITS platform will facilitate pan-India service beginning this September, signifying an important step in the transition to India's national goal of full digitalization of television signals by 2014. The platform will launch with more than 200 digital television channels and will expand to 350 by 2013," said Dr J K Jain, chairman of NSTPL and Jain TV Group.

"Any cable operator can offer digital cable service with a nominal investment of approximately INR 5 lakhs instead of spending crores of rupees to upgrade their networks," he added.

Shri Pradip Baijal, former chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), is to provide full time leadership on NSTPL's HITS project says the company, which currently provides satellite-based services to over 50 national and international broadcasters.

"India has a burgeoning cable distribution market with more than 80 million homes receiving television programming via cable," said Terry Bleakley, regional vice president, Asia-Pacific sales, Intelsat.

"Intelsat's satellites and video neighbourhoods allow for new and innovative platforms that reach an increasingly greater number of consumers in one of the world's fastest growing economies," he added.
