Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is currently doing a series of tests for launching its new communications satellite called the GSAT-11. It weighs 5.7 tons and is said to be the heaviest satellite to be launched by a foreign space agency.

In a report by TOI, the ISRO chairman, K Sivan said, “We are currently doing tests on Gsat-11 at our Bengaluru’s ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC). All tests, including test on its electrical circuits, are going to be over by May 17.”

He further stated, “If we find no anomaly, then we’ll proceed further and start discussions with officials of Arianespace for the next launch date. They have their own busy schedule and we have to start talks to fix a date for our satellite launch”.

The Gsat-11 is a high-throughput satellite, which carries 40 transponders in Ku-band and Ka-band frequencies, making it capable of providing high bandwidth connectivity, with up to 14 gigabit per second (GBPS) data transfer speed. Each of its solar panels measure up to 4 meters. The heavy-duty satellite will help bring high-speed internet connectivity to rural places in India.

ISRO had initially planned to launch the GSAT-11 on 25 May from the European spaceport. However, they do not want to take any chances with the satellite, after the signal failure incident of the GSAT-6A, which was launched from Sriharikota on 29 March. Now the satellite is planned to launch in June. Although, no specific date is mentioned. Besides that, the chairman also talked about ISRO’s plans for their next satellite, called the Gsat-29, which further aims at bridging the digital gap in rural areas.
