The country's market leader in the Two-wheeler segment, Hero Honda has recently said that it has launched a new variant of its best-selling Splendor in the Indian market in a bid to ensure that it gains additional volumes on the product amidst the rising competition in the domestic circuit.

The company has priced the recently launched product at Rs 45,950 (ex-showroom, Delhi).

There is no denying the fact that the Splendor has been a very successful product from the Hero Honda stable in the Indian market.

The company has recently said that it has launched the product in the Indian market as the 125cc segment has been stagnant or even declining in the past one year. However, Hero Honda Motors Senior Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) Anil Dua said that the company believes in the fact that it can grow the market and it has launched the product with the same motive.

Moreover, Dua also mentioned here that the expectation from the company is to grow its sales by about 15-20 per cent in the 125cc segment. It may be noted here that the 125 cc accounts for the close to 20% of the total Indian motorcycle market wherein the total units are expected to be somewhere around 75 lakh units per annum.

The company has already been on a high as it has been able to file four lakh plus unit sales for the past four consecutive months. In fact, with the planned launches for the festive season, it is believed that the company will reach new skies in the times to come.

What's new in Ubuntu 10.10 Alpha 3? Well, this is the most important development release of the up-coming Ubuntu 10.10 operating system, and everyone should get it and test it!

Ubuntu 10.10 Beta contains new wallpapers and an improved theme, a new installer, and the powerful Shotwell photo organizer and editor.

The second screening of 3 idiots on SET Max got more eyeballs than two new films that premiered on different channels on Sunday.

According to TV audience monitoring agency aMap, 3 idiots got a TV rating (TVR) of 2.3 during its second airing. It had premiered on Sony just a month before. Two other films which also premiered on TV on Sunday, Lamhaa and Badmaash Company, had TVRs of 1.1 and 1.4, respectively.

Industry watchers said the rating that 3 idiots got in its second airing was very good, as the film was screened in the afternoon and on a movie channel. “Just in two screenings, the network has been able to recover 65-70 per cent of the cost at which the TV rights of the film were bought. The film would make good profits for the network,” said a media planner, asking not to be named as his agency buys advertisement spots in Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) network channels.

MSM had made around Rs16 crore in advertising revenues during the television premiere of 3 idiots on July 25 on Sony Entertainment Television. The company had bought the rights to telecast the blockbuster for around Rs40 crore in May for a five-year period.

“Advertisers’ response to 3 idiots has been terrific. When the film premiered on Sony, it got 12 sponsors; during its second screening, it had 15 sponsors. The film has very good repeat value and brands have shown keen interest to associate with it,” said Rohit Gupta, president, sales, MSM.

While 3 idiots is the highest grossing film in Indian cinema, Badmaash Company, produced under the Yash Raj Films banner was an average grosser. Lamhaa was a flop at the box office. However, two of the recent big-budget flop films had got average to good ratings when they premiered on TV. Kites, one of the most anticipated films of the year, that tanked at the box office, had got a TVR of 2.5. Raavan had got a TVR of 2.0 when both of them had premiered on Colors, according to aMap data.

Fixed-line telephone users will soon have access to all the interesting applications available to mobile subscribers. In a bid to drive revenue from data services on its fixed-line network, Bharti Airtel is working on an application store for its broadband subscribers. The company currently has 3.1 million fixed-line telephone subscribers, of which 1.3 million have broadband connection.

Mr K Srinivas, President, Telemedia Services, Bharti Airtel, told Business Line, “The application store is absolutely relevant for fixed line, just as it is for cellular users. Within the next 6-12 months, we are working on moving a dumb pipe to an enriched pipe. For this, we will work with partners and content owners.”

He said the availability of heavy media-rich content is driving data usage on fixed line.

“You need the high-speed broadband on a wire line to access these services. Fixed line is no more about voice. Therefore, we had 80 per cent of our business from voice three years ago, now we have 50 per cent from data. Two years from now, non-voice will be 80 per cent. We have changed our strategy to enable this transformation.” Airtel has invested in rolling out carrier Ethernet network in major cities and has moved from ADSL to VDSL, which can offer speeds up to 100 mbps.

“A few years ago, 95 per cent was sub-256 kbps. Today we don't have anyone under 512 kbps. This exercise of moving users to higher experience will continue,” he said. As a result, Airtel's average revenue per user from fixed line has moved up for the first time to Rs 970 a month. The telemedia business contributes about 9 per cent of Airtel's overall revenues. The company is also targeting the SMB (small and medium businesses) segment with cloud services such as hosted mail Web-site builder and online desktop. “The big opportunity for us in the cities is the SMB community. More and more companies are seeking connectivity. We are working out a roadmap to make connectivity more relevant to SMBs,” he added.

On future plans for IPTV, Airtel is treating it as a niche value-added service on top of broadband. “Nowhere in the world has IPTV ever been prime mover of TV viewing. DTH is mass and the prime mover. But IPTV has the ability to be interactive, which DTH does not. IPTV is a huge value added on broadband, but it is not an alternative to DTH. It will remain niche in India till you hit 100 per cent broadband penetration with capability of at least 4 mbps,” Mr Srinivas said.

Downloading music and streaming videos on the Internet and mobile handsets may soon be passé. With the government allocating 3G spectrum, content providers are ready with new services.

Hungama Digital Media and Reliance Communications are all set to offer live shows on the Internet and mobile.

ArtistAloud.com, a Hungama Digital Media Entertainment company, has taken an initiative to distribute unpublished songs of independent artistes on the Internet. The music will be made available on mobiles, too.

The initiative launched in June, started with 35 artistes. Now, the number has now grown to 81 across 21 different genres. The company has named the live concerts on the Internet as ‘Webcerts’.

“Webcert is a concert concept where music lovers can listen and view live performances from within the comforts of their home, office or anywhere they have good Internet connectivity. There is no live audience at the venue of performance. It is strictly a live online concert and there are no charges for watching it,” said Siddhartha Roy, COO, Hungama Digital Media.

The first webcert on ArtistAloud.com was by composer and performer Shibani Kashyap. Roy said more than 10,000 people had seen the webcert. “Webcerts are supported by sponsors and are free for online consumption. However, users will have to pay a fee for the original songs, which can also be bought as caller ring back tones (CRBTs) for mobile phones.”

Abhijeet, Sagarika and Roop Kumar Rathode are among a hosts of artists who have joined the platform.

Ashish Pherwani, associate director, Ernst&Young said , “They are creating stars by providing a platform to artistes and are also creating intellectual property (IP). If these artistes get popular, there will be an opportunity to take them to the live performance stage, which they can monetise”.

Recently Universal Music tied up with Reliance Communications to make its music catalogue available to RCOM customers and offer live performances. Universal Music will organise five shows – with four Indian artistes and an international artiste – that would be streamed live to RCOM subscribers for a price.

“RCOM and Universal Music will arrange exclusive Indian concerts with Shaan, Sunidhi Chauhan and Mohit Chauhan, among others. The partners will also line up international concerts with contemporary pop singers,” said Rajat Kakar, managing director, Universal Music India.

“Live performances and on ground events are going to grow manifolds in the coming years. Corporate events and public performances will bring in some royalties for the music companies. However, how many of these live concerts are made available and consumed on the mobile platform will depend on the popularity of the artiste, the price at which it is available and most importantly the quality of streaming,” said Pherwani.
bs

The International Cricket Council said on Thursday it has charged Pakistan's Salman Butt, Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif with various offences under its anti-corruption code.

The players "have been officially notified of the offences they are alleged to have committed and have been provisionally suspended pending a decision on those charges", the ICC said in a statement on its website.

"In accordance with the provisions of the code, this means they are immediately barred from participating in all cricket and related activities until the case has been concluded."

Test captain Butt and fast bowlers Aamer and Asif were all named in a News of the World report which alleged they were involved in a "spot-fixing" scam by bowling deliberate no-balls in last week's Test match with England in exchange for cash.

The trio have protested their innocence and the ICC said they have the right to contest their suspension, and have two weeks to request a hearing before anti-corruption tribunal where they can defend themselves.

However, ICC Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said: "We will not tolerate corruption in cricket - simple as that.

"We must be decisive with such matters and if proven, these offences carry serious penalties up to a life ban.

"The ICC will do everything possible to keep such conduct out of the game and we will stop at nothing to protect the sport's integrity. While we believe the problem is not widespread, we must always be vigilant."
In the run-up to Onam, Kerala’s biggest harvest festival that fell on 23 August, Reliance Big TV Ltd got busy promoting its direct-to-home (DTH) television service through 130-plus shops. The outcome: a 40% increase in subscription in the state.

The DTH firm is now preparing for Ganesh Chaturthi, a 10-day pan-India religious celebration that begins on 11 September. It will have kiosks near popular pandals or structures housing idols of Ganesh, the elephant god, as well as in-store promotions through 450-plus outlets in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and Kolhapur, all in Maharashtra where the festival is celebrated with added fervour.

Umesh Rao, senior vice-president at Reliance BIG TV, the DTH arm of Reliance-Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (R-Adag), expects to drive up his firm’s retail presence by 20% by offering trade promotion programmes, or incentives, to distributors and retailers during the campaign.

Operators in India’s `3,000 crore-plus DTH industry are piggybacking on the festival season to grow their subscriptions. Some half a dozen firms have only around 25 million subscribers among them and are competing for more.

While festival sales are not new to India, it’s the overdrive in the DTH industry that is drawing notice.

“They are at a stage where they need to acquire customers and such under-priced deals need to be pushed if they want to keep up with competition,” said Anand Shah, an analyst with Angel Broking Pvt. Ltd, referring to several large discounts and free offers lined up for Ganesh Chaturthi.

Reliance Big, for instance, is offering free DTH connections to buyers of Samsung LCD TV sets of 26 inches onwards in Maharashtra.

Airtel Digital TV, the DTH arm of Bharti Airtel Ltd, is offering high-definition DTH connections at an initial installation cost of `750 on purchase of a select range of LG flat panel TV sets. Buyers would also be entitled to a 75-day free subscription on certain packages, said Sugato Banerji, chief marketing officer, DTH services, Bharti Airtel.

Normally, the installation costs `2,840 for new subscribers and `2,250 for upgrade by existing customers. Post-installation, subscribers pay monthly as per the bouquet of channels they choose.

Following a doubling of sales volumes during Onam in Kerala, Airtel Digital is planning campaigns around Durga Puja and Diwali as well over the next couple of months.

Videocon d2h, part of Videocon Industries Ltd, is pushing its Ganesh Chaturthi platform on the plank that it delivers the most number of Marathi television channels.

The operator has also added Urdu channels in the run-up to Eid, which, too, falls around the second weekend of September.

“Regional viewing preferences are very important for us and we ensure every effort to provide more content for customers from different regions,” said Saurabh Dhoot, director, Videocon group.

Tata Sky, the DTH joint venture between the Star group and Tata group, is yet to launch its festival schemes.

Dish TV, which claims to be the country’s biggest DTH operator with at least 8 million subscribers, said it will wait to gauge offers by rivals before launching its festival packages.

India is the third largest in the Asian pay TV market, behind Korea and Taiwan, according to research firm Media Partners Asia (MPA).

Pay TV revenue from advertising and subscription in the country grew 17% in 2006 to $4.2 billion (around `19,660 crore) and is estimated to double to $10 billion by 2011 before rising to $16 billion by 2015, MPA said in a report earlier this year.

Ashok Mansukhani, president, Multi-System Operators Alliance, a body representing operators who distribute mostly free channels through the cable lines, said festival discounts show that DTH players are working on a cost-minus model. “Most of them have had four years of commercial operations and are covering nearly 25 million homes today. But they are bleeding.”

MUMBAI: The Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) have taken a knock from the cricket genre so as to shed 111 GRPs (gross rating points) in the Hindi speaking market for the week ended 28 August.

On an All-India basis, the genre share of the GECs has moved down from 30.8 per cent in the previous week to 28.8 per cent during the week, registering a 6.5 per cent fall in the overall television viewing pie.

Meanwhile, the sports channel genre has witnessed a major boost for the week, thanks to the India-Sri Lanka-New Zealand series. The cricket match on Saturday attracted huge audiences to Ten Sports and DD1, pushing up the Sports genre share to 4 per cent of the overall TV viewing pie. The genre saw almost a 74 per cent jump from the 2.3 per cent share that it had in the prior week.

Media observers, however, believe that the GECs have not seen any ratings fall but have rather come back to the base ratings after a week of spikes as a result of special programming.

"Star Plus, Colors and Sony Entertainment had specials lined up in the week before, which had propelled their ratings. The current week's ratings are without such special programmes," a media observer commented.

Star Plus, which shed the maximum (38 GRPs) points during the week, still remained at the top spot with 331 GRPs followed by Colors with 290 GRPs (a fall of 26 GRPs). Zee TV, again showing the strength of its stable base, sustained at the third spot with 235 GRPs, a fall of nine GRPs over that of the previous week's tally.

Sony Entertainment Television, which had aired the grand finale of Indian Idol 5 in the previous week and pocketed 29 GRPs from the event, shed 21 GRPs in the week and remained at number four with 182 GRPs.

Meanwhile, the other channel genres which saw growth were Hindi News - 4.3 per cent (from 4 per cent), music - 2.8 per cent (from 2.6 per cent) and cartoon\animation - 5.4 per cent (from 5.3 per cent). However, the Hindi movie genre saw a decline from a relative share of 10.3 per cent to 10 per cent while the English movie genre fell from 0.75 per cent to 0.68 per cent.
