New Delhi, March 13 Of the 29 applications received for the post of Chairman of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the screening committee has shortlisted 13, based on their experience and knowledge of the telecom sector.
While most of the applicants in the fray are former Government employees, Mr P V Ramadas, Vice-President, HCL BPO Services, is the only executive from the private sector named in the list.
Others who have been shortlisted include Mr Yashwant Bhave, Secretary, Consumer Affairs; Dr Surendra Pal, Associate Director & Program Director, ISRO; Mr S D Saxena, former Director BSNL; Mr R K Batra, legal expert; Mr K Sridhara, Member, Telecom Commission; Mr Arun Ramanathan, Secretary, Ministry of Finance; Mr S Dash, Secretary, Heavy Industries, Mr G S Grover, former member of Telecom Commission; and Mr A K Singh, former Secretary, Ministry of Textiles.
Dr C Pal, former Secretary, Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Mr Sukhbir Singh, Member, Railway Board, are also in the fray.
Among the 16 whose applications have been rejected, the prominent ones are Mr D.S. Mathur, former Secretary, DoT, and Mr G D Gaiha, Member, Telecom Dispute Settlement Appellate Tribunal.
While Mr Mathur’s application was rejected on the ground that it was made before the advertisement for the post was issued, Mr Gaiha has crossed the age limit.
Applications were also received from a professor in a private management institute and also from a retired Lieutenant General. The DoT Secretary, Mr Siddartha Behura’s name is not in the list.
The current TRAI Chairman’s term ends on March 22.
The DoT had earlier suggested an amendment in the TRAI Act 1997 to allow non-Government experts to apply for the posts.
According to DoT, the move is in line with the selection criteria followed by other regulators such as the IRDA, CERC and SEBI.
