AUSPI, the body representing CDMA players, today urged telecom regulator TRAI to continue with its policy of 'no intervention' in tariffs amid reports that the regulator could end its tariff forbearance policy.

"The Authority may continue with its policy of forbearance and desist from intervening in the market," AUSPI said in a letter to TRAI chairman J S Sarma.

It also took up the issue of the regulator asking its member companies to present the business case of for their low tariffs after Bharti Airtel had approached TRAI alleging predatory pricing by new operators.

"Our member service providers Reliance Communications, Tata Teleservices and Sistema Shyam Teleservices have been asked by the Authority to present the business case for their tariffs. We are surprised to note that our members have been singled out as incumbent operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and Aircel which have matching tariffs and are not required to present their business plans," AUSPI said.

It said in case the Authority decides to examine the business case of perceived below cost tariffs, then all operators, including incumbents, should be asked to present their business case.

The Authority introduced tariff forbearance in 2004 to promote competition in the market.
