Facing stiff competition from private broadcasters, Doordarshan is struggling to up its revenues. The pubcaster managed a measly growth for the fiscal ended 31 March 2009 to clock Rs 7.37 billion, up from Rs 7.24 billion a year ago, but still lower than what it pocketed in 2005-06.
It is, however, important to note that Doordarshan has managed to increase its revenue after seeing a fall for two consecutive fiscals. For 2006-07, the revenue had slid to Rs 7.26 billion.
DD's operational costs for 2008-09 have climbed to Rs 11.52 billion, because of the impact of the recommendations of the Sixth Pay Commission. The operational cost in 2004-05 was Rs 8.63 billion, but in the subsequent year this jumped to Rs 10.69 billion on account of grant of Dearness Allowance.
For 2006-07 and 2007-08, the operational cost was Rs 9.14 billion and Rs 8.30 billion respectively.
Meanwhile, Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni announced in Parliament that the Group of Ministers that is looking into the capital and financial restructuring of Prasar Bharati is being reconstituted.
