Airtel in deal to become first Indian sponsor of Manchester United

NEW DELHI: Bharti Airtel has signed an exclusive five-year deal with Manchester United, becoming the first Indian sponsor of the leading football club.

The agreement, which did not reveal the commercial terms, will enable Airtel to have exclusive rights on content such as video clips of Premiership matches and Uefa Champion’s League highlights, classic goals and games of Manchester United. The service provider on its network can show match feeds and reports and editorial features.

Says Manchester United Club CEO David Gill, “This partnership demonstrates the enduring strength of the Club internationally. We are very proud to have Bharti Airtel as the first Indian company to partner with Manchester United Club. This major partnership will bring the action and the passion of Manchester United directly to the millions of fans of Manchester United across India and other Asian countries.”

Adds Bharti Airtel deputy CEO Sanjay Kapoor said, “Football is definitely seeing a growing interest amongst the young population in India. Therefore, we are making a pioneering effort to bring to them rich football content on their mobiles, a fantastic opportunity to be part of the world’s leading football club through participation in soccer schools, and also an opportunity to watch football matches across Europe.”

Users of Airtel can download mobile games, ringtones, animations, and wallpapers of Manchester United players such as Ronaldo, Rooney, Ferdinand.

Additionally, the deal will allow Airtel to provide access to Manchester United mobile portal wherein mobile products and content will be exclusively available to the Airtel customers.

Select Airtel customers will be flown to Manchester to watch matches at the Old Trafford Ground in the Premier League, FA Cup, Football League Cup, Uefa Champions League. A few Airtel customers will also get an opportunity to travel with the Manchester United first team during their away Uefa Champions League matches.

Airtel customers will also get an opportunity to train at one of the Manchester United Soccer Schools (MUSS) which is currently under operation in Hong Kong, Seattle, Toronto and Dubai apart from Manchester.

The services will be available to Airtel customers aross India, Sri Lanka and Seychelles. Airtel says it has just under 94 million mobile customers in these territories.
