Ormax Media, a consulting firm specialising in the entertainment business, has formulated a survey, called Characters India Loves, which ranks 125 characters from Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) on the basis of their likeability.

Characters India Loves, a quarterly study, maps the likeability of television characters across SECs, genders and markets. The legwork of the survey was conducted between July 15, 2009 and August 12, 2009 among 2,000 respondents (70 per cent females and 30 per cent males).

The parameters of the survey were - audiences between the age group 15-44 years, SEC A, B, and C in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Indore. The respondents were asked to name any one of their favourite characters on TV, and no clues about the programme or channel were given; they were asked about their preferences, etc.

Shailesh Kapoor, director, Ormax Media, says, "The aim of the study is to ascertain the reasons as to 'why' these characters are loved, which helps in future direction of the show and the integrity of the channel is maintained."

Anandi (Avika Gor), the protagonist from Balika Vadhu on Colors, is the most liked character with a share of 16.8 per cent; while Akshara (Hina Khan) from Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlaata Hai on Star Plus, came in second with 11.9 per cent share. Rajeev Khandelwal, host of Sach Ka Saamna, took the third place with 7 per cent share of likeability.

The other characters include Laali of Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo)on Zee TV with 3.2 per cent of the share; Daya from the comic serial Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma on Sab TV, who got 3 per cent; Radhika from Chhoti Bahu on Zee TV received 2.6 per cent share of likeability.

The top 10 characters differed for male and female audiences. For instance, in women's preferences, Rajeev Khandelwal ranks No. 7; whereas men have ranked him first. While Salman Khan and Rakhi Sawant do not feature in the top 10 liked characters for women; among the men, Rakhi Sawant's popularity is double that of Salman Khan's.

Other inferences were that among males, non-fiction characters rated high on popularity. Apart from characters from top rated shows on the top three channels - Star Plus, Colors and Zee TV, characters from Sab TV and NDTV Imagine also rated high on likeability.
