Android Gets its First Trojan
Advertisement
#1
Sends out automated text messages to premium numbers

Two years ago, we had broken a story on how an application called iSexPlayer that masqueraded as a sex portal application for Nokia's S60 devices. iSexPlayer was the first known application that showed malware like behaviour for the S60 Third Edition platform - which was then considered quite secure.

Although much water has flown under the bridge since then, threats of malware for most mobile operating systems still remain and the latest victim of the same happens to be Android which apparently has had its first tryst with apps from the dark side.

According to Kaspersky, a new Trojan has been doing the rounds of the Interweb of late - targeting Android based devices. The Trojan, known as Trojan-MS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, comes disguised as a harmless media player application. It prompts users to install a standard, 13kb .APK file. Once you install it, it will duly start its duty and start sending out SMSs to premium rate numbers. The worse part about this is that you'd be unaware of this spamming spree from your phone.

Now, the way this Trojan does things is strikingly similar to what iSexplayer did to S60 devices. The only differences back then was that the application actually made calls - and not sent out SMS.

In both the cases, however, it is clear that the only way for anyone to get infected is to manually install the application to their device. So, the next time you blindly install that smart looking application that promises something, make sure you don't end up infecting your phone.
