Antarctica, the icy continent on earth, is warming, say researchers but feel that no exact reason can be attributed to the phenomenon."The average temperature trend for the last century is 0.10 degree Celsius per decade. But it was significantly higher up to 0.36 degrees in the last few decades," Thamban Meloth, the Programme Director (laboratories) of National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research (NCAOR) said yesterday.

Meloth, who has the credit of setting up India's first ever ice core laboratory at NCAORs facility at Goa, was delivering a lecture on recent climate change in Antarctica - an ice core perspective, held at the National Institute of Oceanography here.

The researcher, who was the part of a recent mission on Antarctica, said that whether these changes are due to global warming or mere regional phenomenon, is a debatable subject.

Replying to a question, Meloth said most of the people believe that global warming has not affected Antarctica as much as the Arctic. He opined that Antarctica being a huge and stable continent, the only area which can be affected is Antarctica peninsula.

The expert stated that the data collected through nano instrument indicates that droning land region is more warmer than the rest of East Antarctica.

Meloth, who was the part of Antarctic mission, a couple of years ago, said that the icy continent is less understood due to its remoteness, which makes field data collection difficult.

Stating that the study on ice core can provide crucial research data, he said that ice cores are not only useful for reconstructing the long climatic changes but also the recent scale changes.

The alumni of Cochin University of Science and Technology's Marine Geology batch in 1992 said that the ozone layer over the continent is depleting and the ozone hole is increasing over the continent.
