BCCI-ICL to meet in Johannesburg to sort out 'rebel' tag

Members of the International Cricket Council (ICC) will meet on Monday in Johannesburg, where BCCI and Indian Cricket League (ICL) officials will once again come face to face for the umpteenth time to discuss the 'rebel' fate of the ICL. The only difference this time around is that the cards won't be held so close to the chest as had been the case all along.

Shashank Manohar, president, BCCI and Himanshu Mody, chief executive, ICL, will sit across the table, while it is not sure if Subhash Chandra, chairman, Essel Group will be a part of the proceedings and discuss what can be done to bring an end to the impasse plaguing the game for two years now.

David Morgan, president, ICC will negotiate, while James Sutherland, CEO, Cricket Australia will also attend the meeting. Morgan has been in touch with the ICL, trying to gauge how they will react to what are apparently concrete suggestions the BCCI has in mind.

Until now, it had been a case of ICL meeting BCCI with loads of expectations and in turn BCCI pouring cold water on everything that was brought to the table. Monday's meeting, however, could be different. If those monitoring the developments are to be believed, then Johannesburg is where the BCCI will be ready for a positive dialogue with ICL for the first time.

That is precisely the reason why Manohar, a known hardliner, has personally taken the all important flight to South Africa. The first indications came in Perth last month when the daggers were withdrawn and a truce appeared on the horizon. That ICC wanted BCCI to draw a roadmap to peace was the reason why things had to be postponed until this Johannesburg meeting.

In all likelihood, BCCI may put forth certain conditions which the ICL, left with little choice, would have to follow. The conditions include BCCI asking the ICL to immediately call off all its privately-sponsored T20 League. That, say sources, is agreeable to Zee who have already called off their World Cricket Series.

After all, they also have to consider that with the market being so harsh and feeble, it is quite difficult an affair to sustain the show. Secondly, the BCCI wants the Zee Group to take charge of a few of its junior level tournaments along with other events like the recently announced corporate cricket league.

Tournaments like the inter-school Polly Umrigar Trophy (u-16) and the inter-state Vijay Merchant Trophy (u-16) are tournaments are a few that sources talked about as examples. In turn, BCCI might offer ICL with a stake in one of the IPL teams or remove the tag of Zee being a blacklisted company when it comes to future telecast rights.

For the record, Nimbus' four year deal with BCCI for telecast and production rights comes to an end in 2010.
