Value-added services: Union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed launching BSNL’s 3G mobile services in Malappuram on Thursday.

MALAPPURAM: Telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) on Thursday launched its 3G mobile services in Malappuram district. Union Minister of State for Railways E. Ahamed inaugurated the services at a function here.

He said both the Railways and the Telecom were playing a significant role in bringing about national integration in the country.

M. Ummer, MLA, presided over the function. District panchayat president Arimbra Mohammed inaugurated the sale of the 3G SIM cards. V. Jagadeesan, general manager of BSNL Malappuram circle, welcomed the gathering.

Malappuram municipal chairman Kiliyamannil Yakoob and Charley Mathew, BSNL general manager for mobile services, addressed the gathering.

Mr. Mathew said the people of Malappuram were resisting the BSNL move to put up new towers to offer better services.

“If this attitude does not change, the huge amount we propose to invest in Malappuram might go to some other district,” he said.

In response to Mr. Mathew’s complaint, the Union Minister directed the district panchayat president to look into the matter and find a solution to it.

Although 3G was launchedd in Malappuram and Kondotty, BSNL officials said the services would soon be made available in major towns like Tirur, Manjeri, Perinthalmanna and Nilambur.

Besides high fidelity voice, 3G would offer video call, live mobile TV, and high speed Internet. “We will introduce other value-added services in the next phase,” said K.D. Sebastian, DGM mobile.

BSNL had launched 3G service first in Kannur and Kozhikode districts, followed by Kasaragod, Mahe and Thrissur. It was launched in Kollam on Thursday. It will be launched in Pathanamthitta on Friday. In Kottayam, on February 2, and Palakkad and Alappuzha on February 4.

BSNL officials said they were planning to complete the rollout in the State by February 15.
