Gemini Communications Ltd along with its subsidiary PointRed Telecom has been awarded Rs 435 crore worth project from the state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL). Gemini-PointRed would be deploying IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX for BSNL in India.

Gemini Communications is an Rs 270 crore telecom and networking company listed on BSE and NSE.

BSNL had received bids from Huawei Telecommunications, ZTE, Samsung, Gemini–PointRed Alvarion, Motorola and Harris Stratex in August 2009 for the Rs 1000-croremobile WiMax tender. As per the tender conditions upon technical qualification of BSNL, four lowest bidders were to be selected to roll out the world's largestMobile WiMAX network.

With this, Gemini-PointRed consortium has emerged out to be the lowest bidder for the L1 and has been given 40% of the contract. The remaining three winners account to be ZTE, Harris Stratex and Alvarion who has been contracts for the L2, L3 and L4 respectively.

Total of 7000 Mobile WiMAX base station are to be deployed across BSNL networks in India. The WiMAX contract is spread across several states of India for enabling various types of internet protocol-based data-voice-video applications.

BSNL’s Mobile WiMAX network, once deployed, will be the largest network in the world. This network will be connecting various common service centres across India for delivering e-governance service to citizens and for commercial broadband services.

BSNL has already awarded first phase of the Rs 270 crore mobile WiMax project to Huawei Telecommunication and Gemini-PointRed combination in January 2009.

As the Indian telecom region readies for the WiMAX spectrum auction, due in January for private operators, Mobile WiMAX equipment manufacturers are tipping to garner their share in the Rs 40,000 crore Indian mobile WiMAX market. Home-grown PointRed Telecom, mobile WiMAX equipment manufacturer is one of them.
