As the state-run telcos are consistently showing signs of deteriorating financial condition, the Prime Minister of India has ordered examination by a committee to look into the matter.
A report at the Press Trust of India says, “Concerned over deteriorating financial health and competitiveness of state-run telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the government has constituted a high-level committee.”
This was decided at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last week to review the performance of two state-owned PSUs - BSNL and MTNL.
According to the details furnished in the report the constituted committee would be headed by Sam Pitroda, advisor to the PM on Public Information Infrastructure & Innovations with Deepak Parekh, a noted banker as the member of thecommittee. The committee would look into the issues and give recommendations within a month.
As for the condition of Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited (MTNL), it is comparatively better and the issues concerning it would be considered in the normal course, separately, said the PMO.
The committee formed for BSNL would also be looking into BSNL's ongoing Rs 35,000 crore GSM expansion tender, which has raised eyebrows and controversies for around more than a year now.
