For the fiscal year 2009-10, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is ramping up total number of DSL and such broadband connections all over India by setting a target of 7.5 million connections from the previous fiscal year's achievement of 3.7 million connections.
BSNL is strongly present in smaller towns of population in the range of 1 lakh, which houses the district and taluk head quarters. These towns don't attract private players much due to the availability of lesser broadband/internet users. But the BSNL, which is Govt. owned is set to increase the penetration of Internet in India by proactively providing internet services in all regions of India uniformly. This option doesn't impact much on the profit of BSNL due to its ability to balance revenues from urban, semi-urban and rural areas. However private broadband service providers are active in partially industrialized tier-2 cities due to the rising demand of broadband connection in such cities.
BSNL is also offering broadband services in selected rural areas. With its wired and wireless telecom mesh spread all over India, Only BSNL has the capability in terms of equipment and other infrastructure to provide Internet broadband connection to every nook and corner of India.
