SHILLONG: State-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) will launch the third generation mobile services in the North Eastern region by August. The services would be first launched in the state capitals and some important towns before it i s extended throughout the region gradually, BSNL officials said.

According to the officials, the traffic congestion in mobile services in the region would be removed by the launch. The 3G services allow telecom operators to offer high-speed Internet and video calls on mobile phones as well as mobile TV facility.

A senior official of the Meghalaya Telecom District said once the 3G services are launched the data transfer speed is expected to go up to 3.6 MBPS. In Meghalaya, the Main Switching Centre in Shillong is being upgraded to make it 3G compatible, which in turn will also increase its capacity. Also, all the towers are being parented to the new system, he said.

He said some additional base transceiver station (BTS) locations are also being added to the network. In Meghalaya, BSNL has about 71,000 customers that is expected to take a leap after the launch of the services.

BSNL is the only service provider to procure the licence to operate 3G services in the region and the state-owned company feel this would see a shift of premium customers towards it. - PTI
