Google released developer preview images for Android ‘N’, the next major Android release last month, ahead of Google I/O 2016 in May. The update brought Multi-window support, Notification enhancements, Data Saver, Background optimizations and more new features. Now it has released the Preview 2 for compatible Nexus devices. This update brings several new features, including Unicode 9 emojis and also fixes few bugs that were present in the first release.

Android N Developer Preview 2 includes:

Vulkan:

Vulkan is a new 3D rendering API which we’ve helped to develop as a member of Khronos, geared at providing explicit, low-overhead GPU (Graphics Processor Unit) control to developers and offers a significant boost in performance for draw-call heavy applications. Combined with a threading-friendly API design which allows multiple cores to be used in parallel with high efficiency, this offers a significant boost in performance for draw-call heavy applications.
Launcher shortcuts: Now, apps can define shortcuts which users can expose in the launcher to help them perform actions quicker. These shortcuts contain an Intent into specific points within your app.

Emoji Unicode 9 support:

We are introducing a new emoji design for people emoji that moves away from our generic look in favor of a more human-looking design.

API changes:

This update includes API changes as we continue to refine features such as multi-window support (you can now specify a separate minimum height and minimum width for an activity), notifications, and others.

Bug fixes

Android N Developer preview 2 is now available for Nexus 6, Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus Player, Nexus 9, Pixel C and General Mobile 4G (Android One) devices on the Android developer website here . You can also get it through Android Beta Program. Stable Android N release will be available in Q3 2016.

Here’s how you can get Android N Developer Preview 2 style folders right now!

Just yesterday, Google started rolling out the Android N Developer Preview 2 for Nexus devices. The update brings a host of new features such as launcher shortcuts, Emoji Unicode 9 support and Vulkan API 3D rendering among others. With the update, Google also introduced new circular folder style for Google Now Launcher. And for those who don’t own a compatible Nexus device and still want to try out the new folder style, Nova Launcher has you covered.

Developer Kevin Barry was quick enough to add support for new folder style to the latest beta version of the Nova Launcher v4.3. The updated folders in Nova launcher act just like the ones on Google Now – they now show equally spaced icons for two or more apps.

To download and try out the new folder style in Nova Launcher beta, you need to enroll to become a tester of the Nova Launcher Beta program from here. After enrolling, you can download the Nova Launcher from here. Do note, due to limitations in clipping objects, the new folder style only works on Android 5.0 Lollipop OS and above.

Now, once you have downloaded the launcher, the new folder style doesn’t come as default and you need to manually apply it. To do this, head over to Nova Launcher settings > Folders > Folder Background > N Preview. There are a handful of other folder styles to choose from, such as circle, square, platform and disk.

The Nova Launcher also offers a host of other customization options to let you enhance the look and feel of the user interface. You can add transition effects when scrolling through the home screen, color and transparency to the background, install icon packs, among others. The launcher also supports gesture inputs for swipe up, down, two-finger swipes, and pinch gestures. These gestures can be customized to quickly launch your favorite apps or shortcuts to a particular task.
