A helicopter carrying Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and four others, including two crew members, from Tawang has gone missing immediately after take-off this morning.

Khandu, accompanied by two of his personal aides, had taken off from Tawang at 9:56 am and was to land at Itanagar at 11:30 am. It was last sighted at Sela Pass, 20 minutes after taking off from Tawang, defence sources in Shillong said.

DIG Robin Hibu said the helicopter went missing after take-off.

The air force has pressed into service two helicopters in search operations to locate the missing chopper.

56-year-old Khandu, who had served in the intelligence wing of the Indian Army, was sworn on April 9, 2007 as the fifth chief minister of the state, replacing Gegong Apang.

This is the third helicopter to get into trouble in the Northeast in the last fortnight.

Well, the helicopter hasn't been identified yet. News of its safe landing in Bhutan premises is not yet confirmed by Bhutan government. Search operations are still going on.

Let us hope that it won't be like another "YSR" like incident

Search for Arunachal CM: Bad weather hampers search operations

Itanagar/Shillong: A Mi17 chopper of the Indian Air Force which went looking for the missing helicopter carrying Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu and four others made two sorties before bad weather forced it to return today.

"The chopper made two sorties for over two hours since 6:00 am, but had to return due to inclement weather. The aerial search can resume, only when the weather clears," Defence Spokesman Wing Commander Ranjeev Sahoo told PTI in Shillong.

"The Mi17 helicopter from Tawang searched the Bhutan areas besides the Tawang-Itanagar route," he said.

Two Cheetah helicopters were on stand-by at Tezpur and another Mi17 at Gwwahati, which could not take off because of the weather, he said.

Defence sources said 30 columns of the Indian Army comprising 2,400 personnel from Tawang and Tenga were searching on the ground for the missing helicopter on the Indo-Bhutan border.

Six ITBP teams with 25 personnel each also joined the ground search operations.

The four-seater single-engine Pawan Hans helicopter AS-B350-B-3 went missing yesterday 20 minutes after takeoff from Tawang at 9:56 am.

Besides Khandu, the others on board were pilots Captain J S Babbar and Captain T S Mamik, Khandu's security officer Yeshi Choddak and a lady Yeshi Lhamu, sister of Tawang MLA Tsewang Dhondup.

The chopper was to land at Itanagar at about 11:30 am. The Guwahati air traffic control had reportedly received the last radio communication from it when it was flying near Sela pass 20 minutes after takeoff.

Arunachal identifies CM copter crash site

ITANAGAR: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Monday said it has zeroed in on an area in West Kameng district bordering Bhutan from where a helicopter carrying chief minister Dorjee Khandu disappeared. Following inputs from ISRO and IAF, the government has identified a 66 sqkm area in West Kameng district bordering Bhutan to trace the missing chopper.

The four-seater single-engine Pawan Hans helicopter went missing on Saturday after taking off from Tawang with Khandu, his security officer, Yeshi Choddak, Yeshi Lhamu, sister of Tawang MLA Tsewang Dhondup and crew members Capt J S Babbar and Capt T S Mamik on board.

Imagery data collected by ISRO and IAF are being analysed and by all agencies for the forces on ground to carry out their search operation in the Nagajiji area of West Kameng, power minister and government spokesman Jarbom Gamlin said on Monday.

"The metallic objects spotted by ISRO satellite images might not be the wreckage of the chopper. Everything will be clear once the teams reach the spot," he added.

Union minister of state (in PMO) V Narayansami said it was not possible for the search teams to move more than one km an hour because of the hostile terrain.

Heavy rains cancel search ops for missing chopper

Itanagar, May 03 : The Indian Army and the Royal Bhutan Army were focusing on rugged, snow-clad terrain at 13,700 feet in Dirang circle in West Kameng district for the helicopter carrying Arunachal Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu which remained missing for the fourth day today, as aerial search was cancelled because of heavy rains.

Satellite images from RISAT-2 reportedly traced a few metal parts in the area, which may be parts of a helicopter, government spokesperson Jarbom Gamlin said.

The ground search was being made by 3000 personnel from the Indian Army, ITBP and SSB with the assistance of the state police, Defence sources said.

Two IAF Mi-17 choppers took off from Tawang in the morning, but had to return from Sela Pass because of thick haze over the mountains.

Four MI-17 choppers were stationed at Tezpur for search operations if the weather improved, Defence spokesman N N Joshi said.
