BBC Worldwide is shutting down two of its entertainment channels,"BBC Entertainment India" and "CBeebies" in India. The channels are to be withdrawn and will stop airing by 30 November 2012.
The BBC World News remains and will be available in India and continue to grow its distribution in the Indian market.
BBC Worldwide claimed that the Indian market continues to remain challenging for pay TV channels, the delays in digitization and the need for the channel operators to pay cable platforms for carriage has been the reason for BBC to shut down its channel.
BBC Entertainment, which made its way in India when it was launched in pan-Asia in 2009, will continue to air in other Asian territories including Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and CBeebies will be available in Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Philippines.
However on the other hand, BBC announced the launch of the BBC Hindi TV programme, Global India, on five channels of ETVNetwork thus expanding its Hindi footprint.
From Friday 2 November, the BBC’s new TV programme in Hindi will air weekly at prime time on ETV Bihar, Jharkhand, ETV Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, ETV Rajasthan, ETV Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and ETV Urdu.
