Breaking News : Google launches Android-powered VR platform called ‘Daydream’

Google is already credited with having brought virtual reality to the masses courtesy of the Google Cardboard. Earlier in January Google had revealed it had shipped over 5 million units of the Cardboard and over 50 million VR apps had been downloaded from the Google Play Store alone. Instead of launching the rumored standalone VR headset though, at the ongoing Google I/O 2016 , the company has unveiled a new virtual reality platform called ‘Daydream’.

The new Daydream platform is built right into the Android N operating system with a dedicated Android VR mode. This mode comes with special VR versions of popular apps like YouTube, Street View, Play Store, Play Movies and Google Photos. Google has also partnered the likes of Netflix and companies like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts for Daydream.

The overall VR experience is said to be much better than what is on offer on Google Cardboards. One of the ways it has improved the experience is by improving ‘motion-to-photon latency’, which is essentially the delay that can keep VR images from properly lining up with your head as you move and turn.

While Google’s partners can follow the guidelines to create Daydream-ready smartphones, you will still need to use a VR headset and motion controller for the entire experience. Instead of launching its own hardware, Google has created a reference design for the headset and controller, which, it says, its hardware partners will build and sell. The controller has a motion sensor so it can be used to play games among other things.
