At the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in Shenzen, Intel announced a new platform for entry level PCs, laptops and all-in-ones called Apollo Lake.

The Apollo Lake system on chip (SoC) will have an x86 microarchitecture, a new generation graphics core and is aimed at affordable PCs across categories. It will start showing in PCs in the second half of the year.

Based on the 14nm process, Apollo Lake SoC has the Goldmont x86 microarchitecture which is based on the Atom architecture. There will most likely be 4 processor cores. On the graphics front, you get Intel’s ninth-generation graphics architecture which is also seen on Skylake processors. This means that the Apollo Lake based systems will be capable of playing back 4K video content.

Intel hasn’t released performance-oriented details such as clock speeds or even in-depth feature specs on the Apollo Lake system.

According to AnandTech , the consumer devices will have a four-core design whereas the communications and embedded systems will most likely have 8+ cores. There is no idea about the TDP limit of the new processors.
Intel is aiming at affordable slim form factor PCs with the Apollo Lake chipset with components such as storage being used by soldered down eMMC flash storage or M.2 NAND chips instead of SSDs or HDDs. Similarly, Intel thinks that it makes more sense to use soldered down Wi-fi as well, instead of a separate module.

Intel’s reference design for the Apollo Lake is a tablet/2-in-1 hybrid system which has an 11.6-inch full HD display, 10-point multi-touch, 4GB LPDDR3 RAM, 64GB M.2 SATA3 SSD or 32GB eMMC storage, M.2 wireless module, integrated USB 2 camera, USB Type C connector for USB power delivery and so on.

The PCs that will house the Apollo Lake platform are expected to come out in the second half of 2016.
