NaMo TV in Gujarat and Lotus TV in Tamil Nadu: BJP on air

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi rarely comes on television for interviews and news shows. But he is clearly not TV-shy - he's getting himself a cable TV channel solely dedicated to himself. Even the name is a combination of his own: NaMo Gujarat.

The channel, yet to be launched - and Mr Modi will flick the switch to "live" himself in a few days -- is timed to perfection for his election campaign that is moving into top gear. The channel is expected to be force multiplier for the campaign, showing his rallies and public meeting live across the state. His Vivekanand Vikas Yatra is already being shown live on four other Gujarati channels, with which NaMo Gujarat has tied up.

Gujarat holds assembly elections in December. Mr Modi's election pitch is centred around Gujarati 'asmita' - pride - and the combination of his name and the state as the label for the TV channel might well have been thought out as an extension of that.

Gujarat government has not given information on Modi's travel: RTI activist
It not yet clear who is paying for this channel. It is being set up by the state BJP.

In the previous election in 2007, Mr Modi has launched a TV channel that was distributed through internet connections, but it was found to be violating the law by the Election Commission.

The BJP wants to use the power of TV to make inroads into the south of the country as well. The party will launch a channel in Tamil Nadu on October 11. But it will have to make itself heard over the clamour that already exists on the airwaves in that state. The two major political parties, AIADMK which is in power and the opposition DMK, both have their own TV networks and as well as cable distribution. The AIADMK runs Jaya TV and the DMK Kalaignar TV.

Television sets are regularly offered in Tamil Nadu as an election promise to voters and are delivered as well.

નમો ગુજરાત TV channel goes LIVE for testing Signal on “GTPL” and “In” cable networks in Gujarat

Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi is now more closer to the people through a new TV channel ‘Namo Gujarat’. The channel ‘Namo Gujarat’ has completed its ‘test signal’ phase. It is now available on all cable networks(including GTPL and In Cable) across Gujarat on channel no. 9 (S1).

So coming to the content part, if ‘Namo Gujarat’ team can continuously add fresh content, if it can occasionally provide live content, if it can cater variety of content rather than unifocal approach, if it can announce and follow some kind of schedule(very important), if it can cater correct information in time(competing with the traditional news media), if it can also have some youth appeal, the channel will be more interesting for sure.

This is a welcome step in the direction to connect the mainstream political party to people through technology.

Modi TV channel goes blank on Day 2

Has Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's biggest media blitzkrieg fizzled out before a proper take off? A day after the launch, the NaMo Gujarat channel, which aired Modi's speeches live on Thursday, went blank. The channel derives its name from the commonly-used initials of the CM.

The Election Commission had called a meeting of broadcasters and directed them to follow guidelines on paid news. The officials also told broadcasters to stop telecast on networks without proper clearances. EC officials refused to comment on representations by Congress leaders to probe the funding of the channel, meant to strengthen Modi's propaganda machinery ahead of the crucial assembly polls in December.

"We have requested EC to investigate who is the financer. The name suggests this is Modi's venture. We need to know if he himself is funding it," said Gujarat Congress president Arjun Modhwadia.

Congress leaders say if Modi is involved, the expenses should be added to his election expenditure. "If EC guidelines are being enforced in case of paid news, how can such expenditure go unnoticed even if Modi himself is not funding it," Modhwadia said.
