Breaking News : Microsoft adds QR codes to the dreaded blue screen of death

Microsoft Windows’ dreaded BSODs (Blue Screen of Death) has been part and parcel of the Windows experience since time immemorial. Finally, more than 20 years since its inception, the BSOD gets an update that’s actually worth writing about. Reddit user, Javelinnl , first reported that he spotted QR codes in Windows 10’s BSODs in the latest Insider Preview Build.

A QR code is a type of matrix barcode that can be programmed to hold information. Scanning it with an appropriate tool/app reveals the information. In its implementation of the QR code, Microsoft says that the codes will help support technicians identify and fix problems at a much faster rate. The codes will also make it easier for readers to scan and share the error messages directly with technicians.

ArsTechnica reports that the QR codes aren’t currently implemented yet, and that all scanned codes lead to the same page with explains how to deal with blue screens. Considering that the codes are only part of an Insider Preview anyway, that’s an oversight we can easily forgive.

Speaking of BSODs, remember the time Bill Gates encountered a BSOD when demoing Windows 98 to the public?
