Breaking News : Mozilla’s new game explains encryption in the simplest way

Encryption is an important concept when it comes to protecting your data, but not many people understand what encryption really is. Encryption, in simple terms is storing your data in an unreadable and scrambled form. We cannot solely depend on lock patterns or pins on our smartphone as they can easily be hacked into. Mozilla has come up with a fun little game to explain the basics of encryption and why it really matters.

The game, Codemoji , is a web-based game and it uses emojis to explain how encryption works. The idea is quite simple — in the first tab type a text message, and in the second tab select from a list of emojis to encrypt the message. You can then share the message with your friend via email of Facebook and Twitter. You will need to tell your friend about the kind of emojis you are using or tell them the IRL so they can decode the message.

Codemoji is a learning tool about encryption and Mozilla says that it should not be used to share personal data as there are much stronger tools than simple emoji ciphers. Mark Surman, Mozilla’s Executive Director lays out the importance of encryption and why they came up with this game, “When more people understand how encryption works and why it’s important to them, more people can stand up for encryption when it matters most.” He also mentions how governments across the world are processing policies to weaken encryption.

The game points out how important it is to understand encryption and to use it keeping in mind your privacy and security. WhatsApp’s recent end-to-end encryption came as a progress but was criticized citing the advantages terrorists would have . Keeping all that aside, Codemoji should help you learn about encryption in a fun and interactive way.
