Breaking News : Smartphone sales grew 3.9 per cent in Q1 2016, Oppo was the best performer: Gartner
Global smartphone sales totaled 349 million units in the first quarter of 2016, which is a 3.9 per cent growth over same period in 2015. According to Garter, the smartphone sales accounted for 78 per cent of total mobile phone sales.

Gartner says smartphone sales were driven by demand for low-cost smartphones in the emerging markers. Gartner also attributes the sales to 4G connectivity plans offered by service providers in many markets worldwide.

Oppo had the best performance in the quarter with sales growth of 145 per cent. Gartner says Oppo also saw strong growth in China. Gartner’s report says Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo grew in China taking share from players such as Lenovo and Samsung.

Huawei saw strong smartphone demand in Europe, America and Africa while Xiaomi and Oppo saw growth in emerging markets in Asia Pacific.

Samsung still holds lead over Apple with 23 per cent market share. “Samsung’s Galaxy S7 series phones and renewed portfolio positioned it as a strong competitor in the smartphone market, and more so in the emerging markets where it has been facing fierce competition from local manufacturers,” said Anshul Gupta, Research Director at Gartner.

Apple had its first double-digit decline with iPhone sales going down over 14 per cent year on year. Apple announced quarterly decline in revenue for the first time since iPhone launch in 2007.

Lenovo is no longer a part of top five smartphone vendor ranking and is also out of the top 10 mobile phone vendor in the first quarter of 2016. “Lenovo had another challenging quarter with its worldwide smartphone sales declining 33 percent,” said Gupta.

As far as mobile operating system is concerned, Android still rules the roost with 84 per cent market share while iOS has nearly 15 per cent share. For Microsoft , numbers would be worrisome with Windows declining to 0.7 per cent from 2.7 per cent in the same quarter last year.

BlackBerry and other operating systems are in the relegatory zone with just 0.2 per cent share. Gartner says Nokia’s return to smartphone and tablet market won’t be an easy mission.

“Making good hardware won’t be an issue for Nokia, but users need a compelling reason to remain loyal to the same brand,” noted Gupta, Research Director at Gartner.
