Are you missing out on watching interesting TV shows in English because of language issues?

Soon, English General Entertainment channels will telecast their prime time shows with subtitles.

English General Entertainment channels have come up with the idea to telecast shows with subtitles to making consumption of English content more easy and in a way where the Indian viewer can comprehend the dialogues without any difficulty. While English movie channels had set the trend, now English GECs too have adopted the same principle of subtitling prime time shows.

While the urban viewer has had an exposure to the various accents in English pertaining to different regions, it is the Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities where this move helps immensely, feel the channels.

Anurag Bedi, business head of an English GEC says, "As the reach of English GECs grows to non-metro markets and people of smaller towns start relating to the Sheldon Coopers and Jules Cobbs, subtitling will further help in viewer connect. While our viewers do understand English, a substantial number of them would not be comfortable with the varied accents used by the actors."

Pankaj Saxena, head of programming, South Asia of a leading English GEC gives another dimension. "Not all English entertainment channels subtitle their shows. But it has pretty much become the norm for English entertainment and movie channels. The idea is to make the accent accessible to a wider audience. There seems to be no doubt that it works."

Considering the size of the target market in India, broadcasters are leaving no stone unturned to woo the Indian viewer. Some in the industry feel the subtitling is only going to enable watching an English show more viewer friendly.

Ricky Ow, executive vice president of a well known English GEC says, "India has the largest number of English speakers in Asia and it's a trend that is set to grow. English subtitling is hence crucial in enhancing the viewing enjoyment for Indian audience. Recognising the needs of this target demographic who have the potential to consume more English entertainment, we've provided subtitling services for the entire prime time slots."

To the viewer, subtitles complement the viewing process. Filmmaker Nupur Asthana, an avid English show buff, says, "It's good idea to have the subtitles. The audience can catch up with the dialogues which are in a foreign accent. Maybe five years down the line, in India we may not need subtitling in English shows."

This seems to be just the icing on the cake with English GECs making innovative moves on prime time.
