Breaking News : Twitter to reportedly remove links and photos from its 140-character limit

Twitter is reportedly mulling over a new minor, yet very important, tweak in tweets. The new tweak will exclude photos and links from the current 140-character limit for tweets,
Bloomberg reports . According to the publication, the change will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

If implemented, it will give users more space (characters limit) to add commentary to a link or images. Right now, links and images use up about 23 and 24 characters respectively. Twitter users have long requested this be changed. While it may not appeal to common users, brands will get more space to be more creative with their sponsored tweets, without taking away the thunder of “micro-blogging.”

Twitter has been facing tough competition from Facebook, especially after the latter made some significant improvements on its platform to focus on news as well as publishers with products like trending topics, native browsing and Instant Articles. Facebook gives publishers a huge advantage of massive reach along with more visually appealing interface.

Twitter, on the other hand, has struggled to bring similar experience onto its platform. Not that it hasn’t been making efforts to do so. Of late it has brought in features such as quote tweets, customized news feed and even tweaked its iconic chronological feed with “while you were away.” For visual appeals, Twitter now shows larger images, supports multiple images upload and so on.

That said, Twitter’s new reported feature is far from being revolutionary but certainly will help improve the user experience. Interestingly, the new report comes months after rumors that Twitter is planning to raise character limit of tweets from 140 to 10,000. Later, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey denied these rumors. It may be recalled that Twitter last year had removed 140 character limit on its Direct Messages feature.
