Breaking News : Weird trick: Rent a movie on iTunes, free up space on your iPhone

Apple’s iPhones are one of the best smartphones you can buy today, but those opting for 16GB storage variants mostly tend to run out of storage. Out of this, you barely get around 11GB of user accessible storage. And, after installing a few apps and storing photos, music and videos, you’ll mostly run out of storage. However, there is one way to reclaim free space on it.

According to a thread on Reddit , there’s one crazy trick you can try to reclaim some of the used-up space (and no, it’s not an April Fool’s prank). The trick is pretty simple and involves renting a movie from iTunes, and voila, you have some free space on your iPad or iPhone. The trick works on any iPhone or iPad, and you don’t need a jailbroken device for it. Here’s how it works.

Step One: Head to Settings > General > Storage & iCould Usage. Here, make a note the amount of available storage on your device.

Step Two: Launch iTunes Store app > navigate to movies > select a movie. Make sure the file is larger than the available free storage on your device. The Redittor has suggested trying a couple of movies that are big enough, such as War and Peace (1956) which is approximately 8.86GB in Full HD, or The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers which is around 6.83GB in size. Now tap on the Rent button twice.

Step Three: As you don’t have enough space available on your device, you’ll get a prompt message regarding the same. (You will also not be charged for the same). Now, go to Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage to check the available storage space. If the trick has worked, you should see a significant increase in the available storage space.

You can repeat the entire process a few times. As of now, it’s unclear on how the trick works, but it probably has got to do with some cache and other storage from apps getting cleaned up.
