Bullet-proof vehicles to secure IPL players

New Delhi: It is not just the Indian authorities who are in a tizzy over the security of players and officials during the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) Season 2.

Foreign cricket boards, too, are trying to do their bit to enhance security for players and officials. The African security agency hired to provide security cover to the IPL has gone ahead and placed a big order for bulletproof SUVs and buses for the team to Jalandhar based Laggar Steel Industries.

"We have received a number of queries. The South African authorities have placed an order for bulletproofing SUVs and buses," said Sanchit Sobti, Director, Laggar Steel Industries.

Laggar Steel Industries has been in the business of bulletproofing vehicles for the high, mighty and those at risk.

However, it is only now that the orders for such vehicles is being placed for the safety of cricket teams obviously following the attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore.

The vehicles prepared by Laggar can also resist explosive detonations. The South African security agency, realising that Laggar might not be able supply in the short span of time, has asked the company also to rent out bulletproof vehicles.

"We have been asked to provide vehicles, but if we cannot do so immediately we might rent them out from existing clients who have been provided such vehicles," said Sanchit Sobti.

Each bus will seat 40 people and each SUV will seat seven.

No one wants to take chances and while cricketing officials are doing all they can to prevent a repeat of the Sri Lankan team's brush with terrorism, bulletproofing companies are perhaps laughing their way to the banks.
