Quote:It was only a couple of months ago that a pregnant 24-year-old Savitri moved to Kharagpur with her husband, who works in a nearby factory. With no friends and acquaintances in the new town, she had few people to turn to for advice. She was very concerned since it was her first pregnancy.
Savitri eventually found help, but from a very unlikely source — the cellphone her husband gifted her so that she could get in touch in case of an emergency. Here’s how it happened. She stumbled upon an advertisement by a reputed pharma company that spoke of medicines to be taken during pregnancies. It had also advertised a helpline number where young mothers could call and register for alerts.
These ‘voice-based alerts’ included advice on the right type of food to eat, the amount of activity that can be undertaken safely and the caution one has to exercise during pregnancies. It was just what Savitri wanted.
A call centre now gives Savitri specific advice, taking into account her state of pregnancy, and also acts as a reminder for her visits to the doctor at regular intervals. The messages are in the form of recordings — a boon for Savitri, since she cannot read.
