CHENNAI: BSNL Chennai Telephones is set to commercially roll out 3G services on its CellOne network this week.
The first set of “vanity numbers” for 3G connections in various levels are likely to be auctioned shortly on the lines of a recent auction for certain numbers on the 2G network where the highest bid was Rs. 55,000 for a particular number.
The 3G services on the CellOne network were soft launched by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi in the presence of Union Communications Minister A. Raja here on February 22. The BSNL has set up about 400 3G towers to provide seamless coverage in Chennai. Recently, BSNL’s corporate office in New Delhi had rolled out revised tariff plans for 3G mobile services under pre-paid voice, video and data plans. The voice call will now be available for as low as 30 paisa per minute and video calls will be available at the rate of voice calls for local and STD and data usage prices at 1 paisa or less per 10Kb. BSNL’s 3G service, which provides high-speed voice, video and data, is presently available in 240 cities in the North Zone and East Zone. BSNL expects that as is the case globally, an initially slow uptake of 3G would give way to faster growth.
