Colors a step away from Star Plus, but...
MUMBAI: It couldn't get any closer. Only a single GRP (gross rating points) separates between market leader Star Plus and newbie Colors.

Puffed with a rich movie lineup and a boost in its top-rated show Balika Vadhu, Colors raced to 304 GRPs for the week ended 28 February, a gain of 70 points from the prior week.

Star Plus improved by just 3 points to take its total GRPs to 305, according to the latest Tam data (22-28 February, HSM 4+ C&S homes).

As per channel share data goes, Tam places both at 25 per cent.

So what led Colors to see such a spike?

Balika Vadhu contributed a peak TVR of 10.18 while Jai Shri Krishna notched a TVR of 6.36. Uttaran's highest TVR for the week stood at 3.98.

For Star Plus, Bidaai remained as its top rated show with a maximum TVR of 6.97, while Yeh Rishta Kyaa Kehlata Hai clocked a TVR of 5.75. Kiran Bedi's Aap Ki Kachehri and Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil also managed to bag a peak TVR of 3.84 and 3.21 respectively to help the channel retain its first spot.

Star believes Colors' upsurge in the week is a blip and the ratings could twist the other way.

"The channel halved their commercial airtime on prime time, created hour and a half long specials of Balika Vadhu and killed one of the key characters in the series creating an un-natural highpoint to get a GRP spike," a Star spokesperson says.

Colors had also gone heavy on movies. "Colors had aired 10 movies during the week including 2 premieres - Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na (Sunday 8 pm) and Welcome to Sajjanpur (Sunday 4 pm) - with limited breaks (four in total). Bhootnath, a relatively new film (Saturday 7 pm), was run without any breaks," adds the spokesperson.

While Bhootnath fetched a 2.85 TVR, Jaane Tu… managed to get a TVR of 2.11.

Colors CEO Rajesh Kamat, who was busy in a board meeting, was not available for comments.

Meanwhile, Zee TV, the third in command, posted 201 GRPs - down by 3 points over last week's 204. While the TVR of the channel's dance reality show Dance India Dance with Mithun Chakraborty as grandmaster stands at 2.79 (4.13 TVR last week), the channel's top-rated fiction Chhoti Bahu at the 7.30 pm slot has gone down the TVR ladder to fetch a rating of 3.74 (3.84).

A look at the other GECs: Sony Entertinment television has marched 13 points ahead from last week to clock 88 GRPs; NDTV Imagine's GRPs have fallen six points to stand at 76; Star One remains stable at 61 GRPs while Sab has walked three points up to clock 48 GRPs.
