NEW DELHI: The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has issued a showcause notice to Hindi general entertainment channel Colors, objecting to the content being shown in the reality show Big Boss 3.

The channel is given five days to explain why the show should not be taken off the air for "offending good taste."

The reality show has received the notice under section 6 and other sections of the Cable TV Networks (Regulation) Act 1995 for the use of vulgar language.

When contacted, Colors spokesperson said, "We are yet to receive the notice from MIB and shall reply accordingly once we receive the same. We at Colors have taken all measures to ensure that our programme Bigg Boss-Season 3 is in compliance with the Programme Code and we meticulously beep out any abusive language used by participants keeping in mind the sensitivity of the audience."

The Ministry has pointed out that certain parts of the reality show "offend against good taste and decency and are not suitable for unrestricted public exhibition."

The notice also says that the language used by some participants is abusive and the show contains visuals which appear to be obscene and violative of the government's Programme Code.

It is specifically pointed out that in a recent visual, one participant has been shown pulling down the shorts of another participant. "This has offended the sensibilities of many viewers," says the notice.

The ministry has asked Colors not to carry content on the show that constitutes a violation of the Code as enshrined in the 1995 Act 1995, failing which it will be taken off the air.

Recently, one of the participants in the show, actor-director Kamal R Khan, was thrown out for violent behaviour after he got into a virtual fist fight with some other participants and also hurled crockery at others taking part.

The show’s format requires 13 celebrities to remain locked up in a house for 84 days and monitored round-the-clock by 40 cameras. This particular season also has provision for a jail for misbehaviour.
