Indian men, women bag bronze in squash team event

Guangzhou, Nov 24 (PTI) Both Indian men's and women's squash teams settled for bronze after losing their respective semifinal ties in the Asian Games, here today.

While, men lost to arch-rivals Pakistan 0-2, Indian eves also slumped to defeat at the hands of favourites Malaysia by an identical margin.

Although, both Siddharth Suchde and Saurav Ghosal put up some resistance but they could not overcome the challenge posed by the Pakistanis to lose 1-3 each and settle for a bronze medal along with Hong Kong.

Hong Kong in turn lost to Malaysia 0-2.

Suchde, after losing the first set, though came back strongly to bag the second but eventually went on to lose 14-16 12-10 9-11 5-11 in 83 minutes.

Archer gets historic silver, India add 6 more medals

Guangzhou, Nov 24 (PTI) Tarundeep Rai clinched a historic silver medal in archery while teen sensation Vikas Krishan (60kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81kg) stormed into the men's boxing finals as India as bagged six medals on the 12th day of competitions in the 16th Asian Games here today.

Tarundeep had his moment of glory as he became the first Indian archer to win a medal in the men's individual event on a day which saw as many as five bronze medals coming India's way.

The women's men and women's squash teams, woman boxer Kavita Goyat and pugilists Suranjoy Singh and Paramjeet Samota were among the bronze medals winners.

With the addition of six more medals, India's medal haul went up to seven gold, 13 silver and 25 bronze. India had finished tenth on the medal rostrum in the last edition of the Games in Doha.

India win bronze in men's hockey event in the Asian Games.

Afghanistan stun Pakistan to reach cricket final

Afghanistan beat Pakistan by 22 runs today to reach the final of the Asian Games cricket tournament as the war-torn nation`s battling team continued their fairytale rise in the sport.

In the first meeting between the two sides, Afghanistan scored 125-8 in their 20 overs before limiting Pakistan`s flamboyant batsmen to just 103-7.

"It`s a big win for Afghanistan. Every person there is watching the match and everybody is happy about this win," said captain Mohammad Nabi.

Afghanistan`s score did not look enough as Pakistan made a lightning start to their reply, racing to 30 off just three overs.

Opening batsman Sharjeel Khan set the tone, hitting 12 off the first over bowled by Sahpur Zadran before he was lbw to Mirwais Ashraf for 23 off 16 balls with four boundaries and a six.

But Afghanistan managed to apply the brakes in mid-innings as wickets tumbled.

As tensions rose there was a fierce verbal exchange between Pakistan captain and opener Khalid Latif and Afghanistan wicketkeeper Mohammad Shahzad, which needed the intervention of the umpires.

Nabi then trapped Latif lbw for 26.

Naeemuddin Qazi was run out to leave Pakistan on 60-3 and two wickets in the same over by Karim Sadiq left them struggling at 68-5.

Naeem Anjum holed out as Pakistan tried in vain to find the boundaries that would ease the pressure and they failed to put themselves in a position to launch a final assault.

Nabi said: "I`m very satisfied because we have fantastic fitness levels and the boys have worked very hard in every position, whether it`s fielding, bowling or batting."
