Dark Knight Rises still on top in fifth consecutive week
Weak overseas box office intakes enabled The Dark Knight Rises to again rule the No. 1 spot for the fifth consecutive week pushing the film's overseas gross total past that of its predecessor, The Dark Knight that released in 2008.

The $20.6-million weekend tally recorded by The Dark Knight in 61 overseas markets was this year's third lowest for a No. 1-ranked title. But, in spite of this, the Christopher Nolan-helmed film totaled its foreign accumulation to $487.8 million, which is $18.1 million more than Dark Knight's $469.7 million.

The Expendables 2

The weekend's notable foreign circuit newcomer was undoubtedly The Expendables 2 that stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Dammes and Arnold Schwarzenegger among many others.

Upon opening, the film took the top market spot with $7.9 million drawn from 750 sites. This was 45 per cent bigger than the opening tally grossed by The Expendables in 2010. In Italy, the film recorded a No. 1 debut gross of $2 million at 259 locations.

1.In the UK, the film tallied $2.8 million (including previews) at around 450 situations.
2.The total gross of Russia, Italy and UK stands at an estimated $12.7 million.
3.It may be remembered that the original Expendables had grossed $171.4 million overseas compared to $103.1 million in the US and Canada.

Companies break the bank to buy Bollywood movie rights

Driven by a series of movies that have made a killing at the box office in the past three months, culminating in the Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger, the acquisition costs of distribution rights of upcoming movies have shot up by nearly 30 per cent.

What has encouraged the renewed risk-taking by movie houses is the increase in average ticket prices, satellite, music and new media rights, and other revenue streams. For instance, Ek Tha Tiger ticket prices were raised 20-25 per cent but not many complained.

Satellite rights have hit the roof, having gone up as much as 50 per cent. Dabangg 2’s satellite rights were sold for Rs 45 crore. New media rights are no longer insignificant — they account for five per cent of total revenues for many blockbusters.

Ek Tha Tiger continues to rule box office, nets Rs 1.75 bn in 12 days

Ek Tha Tiger went on to become a new legend on the Hindi film box office, a fairytale for its makers as it scaled new heights.

The film showed more action at the box office than the screen itself in its rollercoaster ride which began with Rs 329.3 million on Wednesday, 15 August. Its box office collections dropped over 60 per cent on the following days before it made the most of the weekend and the Eid and Basi Eid festive days.

The film, which had registered the fastest Rs 1 billion after its extended weekend, closed its first week (nine days) with a whopping Rs 1.54 billion, all from multiple shows at 3,300 screens thereby exhausting most of its audience.

The film added just Rs 207.4 million more in its second weekend, taking its 12 day tally to Rs 1.75 billion.

The concept of overflow, which was a routine thing till before multiplexes and the concept of film release in hundreds of screens happened, occurred this time around. The houseful shows of Ek Tha Tiger disappointed many and some of them decided to take in Gangs Of Wasseypur instead rather than return watching nothing. Thus, the overflow audience helped Gangs Of Wasseypur get better collection than it would have in its second week as it netted Rs 27.5 million and took its total to Rs 214.5 million.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi failed to get a decent opening due to its face value and then to improve over the weekend with poor word of mouth. The film ended its opening weekend with around Rs 63 million.

Jism2 is almost through at the box office adding a symbolic Rs 6.5 million in its third week to gross a total of Rs 357 million.

Kya Super Kool Hai Hum collected Rs two million in its fourth week taking its total collection to Rs 460.6 million.

Chinese box office helps Dark Knight to stand at No. 1

The Chinese box-office helped The Dark Knight garner the number one position on the foreign theatrical circuit though locally it stood at the second spot.

With an estimated overseas weekend collection of $46.4 million from as many as 10,156 theatres in 64 territories, the Batman sequel pulled in an estimated $28.5 million from Monday through Sunday from nearly 4,100 situations in China, according to distributor Warner Bros.

Also opening in China was the weekend's No. 2, Sony's The Amazing Spider-Man, the fourth title in the blockbuster series, which made its international debut on 27 June.

Of the total intake of $33.7 million from 7,125 sites in 59 markets, $33.3 million came from China over a seven-day period. This was more than that Spider-Man 3 grossed in its total China run. The total foreign collection of Amazing now stands at $475.3 million.

Millennium-Nu Image Films' The Expendables 2, last weekend's No. 1 title on the foreign theatrical circuit, is likely to go down to the No. 3 this week once all the numbers come in later this week.

The action sequel co0starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Dammes and Arnold Schwarzenegger opened at No. 1 in Brazil, Germany, Australia and ($564,053 from 66 sites) in Austria.

The film also remained No. 1 in its second France round and extracted $2.3 million from 870 spots in Italy and Russia via Universal pushing the two-market total to $22.8 million.

Akshay fans shun Joker; Tiger manages to attract viewers

Joker failed to find any slot and faced near total rejection from the moviegoers. As the film's hero Akshay Kumar kept away from the film's promotions, his fans followed suit by staying away from the cinema halls.

Gangs Of Wasseypur collected Rs 11 million in its third week, taking its total tally to Rs 225.5 million.

Raaz3 attracts audiences as Joker performs dismally

Raaz3 took an excellent draw in its opening weekend by collecting Rs 360.2 million. The collections were better at 3-D screening multiplexes and the film is reported to be sustaining well on Monday as well.

Joker laboured through its first week at the box office. Disowned by its hero and part-producer Akshay Kumar, moviegoers followed suit as the film found few takers ending its first week with a meagre Rs 191 million.

Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi collected Rs 17.5 million in its second week to take its total collection to Rs 114 million.

The fourth weekend collections were Rs 23.1 million and, at the end of day 26, the collections added up to Rs 1.97 billion.

English Vinglish creates wonders over weekend

Quote: English Vinglish, which opened to a tepid response, has gone on to do wonders over the weekend and also managed steady collections on Monday.

Having collected Rs 22.5 million on Friday, it showed a marked improvement on Saturday by collecting Rs 45 million and Rs 62.5 million on Sunday, a 250% jump over Friday figures, ending its opening weekend with Rs 132.5 million. The film has caught on with ladies audience and the afternoon shows have become popular with the Kitty Party groups.

KLPD Kismet Love Paisa Dilli is very poor.

OMG Oh My God! got stronger through the week and created a rare phenomenon that does not occur since the era of multi screen/ multiplex releases. The film, which had collected Rs 159.4 million for its opening weekend has gone on to collect Rs 178.6 million during the following four days (excluding Eastern Circuits collections); this despite T20 world cup cricket matches and the fact that admission rates are reduced after the weekend. The 2 October holiday also helped to a great extent on which day it collected over Rs 70 million.

The first week total collection for KLPD is Rs 338 million and the film continues to do well in its second week.

Kamaal Dhamaal Malamaal has collected Rs 72 million in its first week; which is very poor.

Krrish 3 makes the most of its one time watch appeal and solo festival week release despite reports not being in its favour. The film’s collections peaked to a high of Rs 31 crore on Monday once the dull period of pre-Diwali and Diwali were over. The film has gone on to collect Rs 120 crore. The open second week is expected to give the film a good follow up looking at the second weekend which has crossed the Rs 30 crore mark.

Ram Gopal Varma’s attempt at cashing in on the title of his earlier film - Satya - with Satya 2, fails badly. The film is a nonstarter. A poor fare sans face value, the film has been generally ignored by the moviegoer. The film barely managed to cross the one crore mark for its opening weekend.

Micky Virus has added just Rs 50 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 7.9 crore.
Boss has collected Rs 40 lakh in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 52.1 crore.
