DTH News : DoT may extend subscriber verification deadline

#1

The department of telecommunications (DoT) is likely to extend by three months the deadline for re-verification of telecom subscribers under know-your-customer norms for law enforcement purposes. The government had fixed October 31 as the deadline earlier but the operators had not finished their task. Sources said 10% of the total subscribers are yet to be verified. "The telecom service providers are putting in their serious efforts for re-verification. Hence, there is no need for taking any action against them," said an official of the DoT.

In September last year, the government asked all the operators to re-verify all the
customers. This means that only those customers that got registered before September, 2009 will be verified again. Hence only old operators such as Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, RCOM and Tata are effected by this order. Sources said that the government-owned BSNL has also not completed verification of subscribers.

DoT ultimatum to mobile cos. in NE over verification

Shillong, Nov 2 (PTI) The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked all mobile phone companies in the North-East to complete the re-verification of their customers within three months, fuelling speculations that a good chunk of the pre-paid connections might be disconnected in the process.

"After the expiry of three months no recharge will be allowed for unverified connection," said a DoT notification to the service providers, issued on October 20.

Some mobile companies, who fear they would not be able to meet the deadline and that an estimated 75-80 per cent of pre-paid customers would go out of the mobile loop, have outsourced the exercise.

"It will be difficult to meet the deadline. The agencies to which the work has been outsourced are working overtime," said a senior executive at Maxis-controlled Aircel.
