National Geographic will kick off the show Great Migrations on 28 November at 10 pm.

Panasonic is the co-presenting sponsor for the seven-part global programming event which is shot in HD. It follows the arduous journey millions of animals undertake to ensure the survival of their species.

Animal migration is a systematic, strategic and grand movement; to capture it on camera is an even more herculean task. This movement calls for special behaviours of preparation and arrival.

They demand special allocations of energy, but more importantly these animals maintain their attentiveness to the greater mission- survival. Shot from land and air, in trees and cliff-blinds, on ice floes and underwater, Great Migrations tells the powerful stories of many of the planet’s species and their movements, while revealing new scientific insights with breathtaking high-definition clarity and emotional impact.

Narrated by Alec Baldwin, the show will bring to life the tales of courage and determination of the individual that sparks the will and belief in millions.

The National Geographic Great Migrations team spent two and a half years in the field, travelling 670,000 kilometres across 20 countries and all seven continents to bring this ambitious production to television. Seven hours in total and additional hours that include a special on scientific investigation of the mysteries of animal migration; a behind-the-scenes special on the advanced technology, dramatic challenges and passion required to capture these spectacular events; and an hour-long visual concert consisted of the stunning footage set to original music.

Technologies used in creating the show included the heligimbal camera, which required the approval of the US President to capture the wide aerial views seen in the series. The Monarch Butterfly trackers are high speed cameras.

National Geographic Network MD Keertan Adyanthaya said, "Great Migrations is truly an epic HD event, set to showcase an undocumented and magnificent spectacle of animal journeys around the world."

The channel has undertaken a 360 degree marketing campaign to promote this series, which includes on-air spots on Nat Geo; some GEC’s; news channels and also across the Star TV network, where there will be a simultaneous roadblock at the time of telecast of the first episode. There is also an outdoor plan in place which exhibits the visuals of the series.

The channel has also tied up with PVR cinemas across multiple cities to promote the series heavily. There is also a national editorial tie up with The Week magazine who are the print partners for the series. The Week magazine will not only bring to its readers this series but will also carry out weekly Great Migrations contests for its readers and Nat Geo viewers, giving them a chance to win Nat Geo goodies and merchandise.

Apart from this, there is an interactive Great Migrations micro-site www.natgeotv.com/in/great-migrations. The site has features like a 3D moving map that follows the migratory path of species, behind the scenes footage, unknown facts about the animal kingdom, special interviews with the team behind the making of this series and wildlife experts, technical facts and production firsts. This site is also a great learning tool for the channel’s younger audience.

The films reveal in detail animal behaviours never before caught on film, including the dramatic moment a herd of Mali elephants pass through the “La Porte des Elephants” – the elephants’ door – in West Africa, and a monarch butterfly flying with a radio transmitter
attached.

Viewers will also see the unusual footage of a zebra stallion as he tries to herd an orphaned foal.
