DTH News : No takers for satellite rights
Advertisement
#1
Malayalam cinema has come to a standstill at least as far as bagging impressive Satellite deals are concerned. Over the last two months, Malayalam TV channels have stopped buying Satellite rights for films that are currently under production. Unhealthy competition between television channels has allegedly worked to their disadvantage; in a way spoiling filmmakers with prices that almost reach the satellite itself.

Kerala Television Federation (KTF) This is an internal issue which has led to bigger issues. If we put a seal on the pricing of a film before it gets exorbitant, there will be no issues between channels and filmmakers. This does not mean channels will backtrack to shell out lesser for Satellite rights; we just want to keep it from soaring higher than it already is.

Another concern is that Satellite rights are bought way before the merit of the film has been decided; sometimes even while a film is in its pre-production stage. This is turning out to be a risk for channels. At the same time, filmmakers depend on the money they receive from these rights to finish a project. This vicious circle has led to much confusion between channels and filmmakers and we hope to get together on one platform, on August 2, to sort it all out. — The spokesperson has requested anonymity as this is the view of the committee

Kerala Film Producers Association TV channels have stopped buying Satellite rights for films, and we are not really clear about what the reasons are. There has been no specific communication and that is giving rise to a lot of unnecessary speculation within the film industry. It is true that some films manage to bag impressive deals with TV channels well before the film even hits the screens. But these are judgements taken based on various sure-shot parameters. It does not apply to each and every film that is made in the industry. There is a meeting scheduled on August 2 and we hope to be able to sort it all out and get back on track. — Milan Jalil, Secretary of the Producers Association
