The Direct to Home (DTH) has been in news from quite some time and according to information it is likely to expand it services. DTH subscriber base in India is expected to increase the number of connections from the current 16 million to over 32 million connections in two years.
But what other cable operators and service providers have to say on DTH is the main area of concern. They may increase the numbers but can that increase in number benefit user? For an overview of DTH, Media Mughals managed to gather some information from Piyush Mishra, G.M. Sales, Surbhi Broadband PVT. Ltd.
According to Mr. Piyush, "DTH companies, no doubt have grown significantly, however it has not ever reached upto the projected figures. It is evident that DTH companies, in spite of growing the subscription base to 16 Millions (Consolidated Subscriber Base of all DTH Players) have never been able to dent the Cable business, as Cable subscription also has grown from 74 Million to more than one billion, since the inception of DTH popularity in India."
He further adds that, "Though DTH has gained a lot of attention but has not yet reached upto the mark as compared to the Cable services. Cable services offers Digital Cable Services, along with various Value Added Services, Localized content etc. But on the same side, a DTH company cannot offer all these services because of one major limitation called ‘TECHNOLOGY’. Hence the Cable Services now-a-days are competitive than to any DTH Service Provider."
"Digital Cable TV can benefit a user in every manner be it Pricing, localised content, localised customer service, Local Technical Support, Value Added Services, and uninterrupted services even in bad weather as well. Gone were the days where Cable Services were only ANALOG and the subscribers didn’t have any choice other than going for DTH digital reception", adds Piyush.
Again on the other hand, when we talk about the DTH, the other things clicks out now, is that ‘HITS affect over DTH’. "With HITS (Headend in the SKY) technology coming in to the market, it provides cable operators to go Digital, as an option, in a very small investment. DTH business is going to have tough time not only in Urban Area but even in rural because of HITS. For example, let’s say cost of subscription to a customer on HITS Digital Cable TV Service is less than half of any DTH Service," adds Piyush.
As far as the price of LCD is concerned with the increase in numbers of DTH subscriber which is likely to go down according to the information, Piyush comments, "As LCD television price have been mentioned, it has nothing to do with increase of DTH business, as it is being purchased because CRT offers less screen size and occupies more space."
At the concluding note it is now time to watch and wait for the reaction of cable manufacturer, operators, service providers and consumer as well.
