INDIAN WELLS: Fifth-seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko withdrew from the $4.5 million Indian Wells Masters series tournament on Friday with a lingering left heel injury.

The persistent injury has already forced the world number five to pull out early from the Chennai Open, and then skip the Australian Open in January.

He has played just three matches this season.

Like all the 32 seeded players in the draw, Davydenko had a first-round bye, and would have opened his campaign with a second-round match against Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Now his place in the draw will be taken by French lucky loser Olivier Patience.
