MUMBAI: Backed by UK-based private equity firm Ashmore, Digicable Network (India) is now planning a cable movie channel to support its cable TV distribution business.

Digicable’s subsidiary Mega Reach has entered into a joint venture with Novex Communications to combine the strengths of T-Series and Shemaroo for content on the cable TV front.

“We are planning to launch a cable movie and a music channel,” Novex managing director Ketan Kanakia tells Indiantelevision.com.

Mega Reach carries cable content from T-Series consisting of tracks in various languages and genre. Novex, on the other hand, has access to Shemaroo’s library of 3,500 movies for cable TV exploitation.

The joint venture, the details of which are being worked out, will set out to create a movie channel that would compete with Hinduja-owned IndusInd Media and Communications’ CVO and Hathway Cable & Datacom’s CCC, both cable movie channels that enjoy wide distribution.

Digicable, a new multi-system operator (MSO), has already established a pan India cable TV business. Having tied up with T-Series, it was looking at the right breeding for a cable movie channel.

“The equity structure of the joint venture company is yet to be formalised, but we will be holding a majority,” says Digicable promoter-CEO Jagjit Singh Kohli.

The JV company, claiming to have the biggest library of cable content, will also exploit Cable TV copyrights.

Says Kohli, “The joint venture between Mega Reach and Novex has evolved into the largest cable content library in the industry with many blockbusters and mega hit movies. We can now exploit this large library by approaching all the MSOs with various options and schemes on offer.”

Mega Reach Distributors India, a TV channel and content distribution company, carries in its entertainment bouquet the Sahara group of entertainment channels (Sahara One, Filmy and Firangi) and CNEB, a lifestyle channel.

Novex is setting up the Cable TV, satellite and cable movie rights industry along with various MSOs across India. It also represents various broadcasters for hotels and commercial establishments.
