One small step for man. One giant leap for mankind! Launched in 1969, the Apollo 11 Mission was the first manned mission to land on the Moon.

Tonight at 10 pm Discovery will present the dramatic story of Nasa’s mission, commemorating 40 years of moon landing. The special programme commemorating the anniversary of the Moon Landing is called When We Left Earth: The Nasa Missions.

In order to bring this ultimate experience to the viewers, Discovery Channel has transferred mission footage from Nasa’s own secret film vaults to high definition (HD) for the first time, making these national treasures available at unprecedented resolution for viewers now and for future generations of scholars and filmmakers.

Nasa’s space footage has been removed from cold storage just two or three times since it came back from space. The vivid programme features vintage rushes and all the key onboards filmed by the astronauts themselves. The sequences are captured by cameras onboard the spaceships, enabling the series to tell the stories in a depth never seen before.

Three men were selected to attempt the first moon landing. While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the surface of moon, Michael Collins orbited above.

Discovery Networks Asia Pacific senior VP, GM- India Rahul Johri says, “The story of Nasa’s missions and moon landing is a story of great human courage, innovation and groundbreaking science and technology. We are proud to have played a part in preserving Nasa’s film archives so that future generations can celebrate this glorious past and dream and build an even brighter future.”
