The wait is over! Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) RTM is here. The bits were released to the Microsoft Download Center on May 25, 2009 and are now available for download to all Vista users who are already running the operating system plus the first service pack released by the Redmond company in the first half of 2008. Microsoft informed that SP1 was a prerequisite for the installation of SP2 on top of Windows Vista.

In this regard, users will need the previous service pack in order to deploy the latest major update for Vista.

“Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista (SP2) is an update to Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 that supports new kinds of hardware and emerging hardware standards, and includes all updates delivered since SP1. SP2 simplifies administration by enabling IT administrators to deploy and support a single service pack for clients and servers,” the Redmond company informed. This is the Wave 0 release of Vista SP2, with the service pack offered for the English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish versions of the operating system. The software giant is so far serving the bits as Five Language Standalone packages for both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of the operating system. Of course that, with Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 RTM/SP1 joined at the hip, Service Pack 2 is not designed only for the Windows client but also for the server OS.

“SP2 is an update to Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista that incorporates improvements discovered through automated feedback, as well as updates that have been delivered since SP1. By providing these fixes integrated into a single service pack for both client and server, Microsoft provides a single high-quality update that minimizes deployment and testing complexity for customers,” Microsoft added.
