ESPN Star Sports gears up for Twenty20 championship

Mumbai: ESPN Star Sports (ESS) is all geared up for the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 starting from October 8 to 23, 2009. ESPN being the broadcaster is undertaking array of production, presentation and promotional initiatives in order to take the cricket fever to over 160 countries in 11 languages across the globe with its global partnerships. The deal between Airtel as its major sponsor for five years is around Rs 170 crore. According to industry sources the broadcaster is looking at ad revenue of Rs 275 crore from the Champions League, which will have 19 matches.

ESPN has also tied up with others including Havells as the associate partner and Coca-Cola as its beverage partner. According to sources beverage maker Coca-Cola will be closing a three-year on-ground sponsorship deal for around Rs 10 crore with ESS for the $6 million Champions League.

The broadcaster has signed on over 30 advertisers like Maruti, Hero Honda, Samsung, Tata Motors and so on. It has bought on-air time across ESPN, Star Cricket and Star Sports to advertise during the telecast of ICC Champions Trophy and the Airtel Twenty20 Champions League. With respect to the Champions Trophy the broadcaster has already sold 85% on air inventory, while in Champions League currently holds to 75%. Lalit Modi, chairman, Airtel Champions League Twenty20 said, “The Airtel Champions League Twenty20 trophy is set to emerge as the biggest entertainment property on the lines of the World Cup. With respect to the Champions League 15% of the on air inventory have been kept aside as the matches progress and w are also hoping for more advertisers to come up.”

In order to approach the mass, the broadcaster has roped in Hindi film actor Akshay Kumar for a movie tie up for the Champions League with. It has also tied up with Oscar winner AR Rahman to compose the title anthem for the League, while its first on air ad Diwali Hogi Cup Wali’is already running.

The Champions league will have teams from India, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, West Indies, New Zealand and South Africa.
