New Delhi, Aug. 12 Eight new television channels, including politician Vijaykanth-promoted Captain TV and Discovery’s HD channel have been approved by the Government.

In June, the 22 new TV channels had received permission, and with Wednesday’s addition the total number of television channels goes up to 467.

The channels approved include Simply Spice, a music and entertainment channel for the southern States, a Marathi music channel from the owners of Music India and three new channels from the Discovery Network taking its total to six.

Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and a high-definition channel, announced in August last year, will be on air soon, said the network in a statement. Discovery HD will be available on digital platforms such as DTH.

“In the current environment, networks that have a distinct brand proposition will emerge as the preferred destinations for viewers, advertisers and affiliates alike,” said Mr Rahul Johri, Senior Vice-President and GM - India, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific. In June, National Geographic, too, received licence for its HD channel.

Captain TV is named after the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, Vijaykanth, who is popularly referred to as ‘Captain’.

Multilingual channel

“Simply Spice will be a multi-lingual channel offering music and entertainment in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. And we hope to go on air in a few months,” said Mr F. Usman Faheed, Managing Director, Clement Ventures Pvt, which belongs to the UF Group.

The group was earlier associated with Southern Spice, and also owns stake in UFO movies, the digital cinema distribution business.

The Marathi music channel is owned by Media Worldwide Pvt Ltd, the owners of Music India. It also runs Sangeet Bangla and Sangeet Bhojpuri. Owners of India TV, Independent News Service, have also received licence for India TV Wiz. Raftar Media too has received approval for its news channel.

Niche channels

The existing television distribution environment, predominantly analogue is struggling to cope with the hundreds of channels who fight for limited space.

Analysts predict a fall and consolidation of existing channels.

They are also betting on niche channels doing better as the country moves towards greater digitisation with DTH, Internet Protocol Television, digital cable and soon Headend-in-the-Sky.
