FM stations asked to air educational programmes

#1
Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Mr M K Alagiri on Saturday asked 'commercial' FM Radio Stations to earmark some time for airing Educational programmes.

“If the commercially operated FM stations also provided part of their time for educational programmes, it will benefit a large number of people,” he said, launching the 'Gyan Vani Educational FM Radio', the first in South Tamil Nadu, at the Madurai Kamar aj University (MKU) here.

The station would benefit the Students of Distance Education programme and programmes could be heard in a 60 sq km area around Madurai. Referring to the Tamil Nadu government's 'Samacheer Kalvi' (Equitable Education) at schools, he said it had been intro duced by Chief Minister Mr M Karunanidhi so that all students would get uniform education.

He said former Chief Minister Annadurai had addressed meetings in Tamil in MKU and other Universities though he also knew English well, in an apparent reference to the controversy over him being allegedly denied permission to speak in Tamil by Parliament Secretariat.

University Vice-Chancellor Mr R Karpaga Kumaravel said the educational radio wavelength was 105.6 FM and the programmes would be prepared by the university itself. - PTI
