In the past three years, the pace at which cable and direct-to-home (DTH) industry is getting digitised has been quite rapid. According to an estimate presented by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), the subscriber base of both cable and DTH has doubled in the past three years.

The number of subscribers for DTH players increased to 21.3 million in March 2010 from 11.1 million in December 2008. Similarly, the subscriber base of digital cable players also increased to four million in 2009 from two million in 2008. It shows that in the past three years, the marketing strategies and product offerings by DTH and digital cable players have been able to capture a reasonably strong subscriber base.

Going forward, this growth is likely to continue for the industry. Recently, two recommendations from Trai have brightened the growth prospects of DTH operators and digital cable companies. The regulatory body has proposed a reduction in the tariff that DTH players pay to broadcasters.

Secondly, it proposed to increase the foreign investment limit in DTH operators to 74% from 49% now. Both these recommendations augur well for DTH and digital cable players. Especially, considering the fact that the industry is in dire need of capital to maintain its growth streak.

Take for instance, the cost of a set-top box. It is estimated that a set-top box costs between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,000 and players offer a plain-vanilla set-top box for Rs 1,500, bundled with free content for six months and other features, which on the whole brings down the cost for the subscriber to a very minimal extent. However, the pay-back period for players ranges from three-to-five years
