Following the release of the final development milestone of AVG 9.0 in the first half of October 2009, the security outfit has now also delivered its free version of the antivirus. As of October 5th, customers were able to buy AVG Internet Security 9.0, AVG Anti-Virus & Firewall 9.0 and AVG Anti-Virus 9.0. Starting with October 16th, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 is available for download.

“It’s always been our philosophy at AVG that everyone has the right to basic computer security at no charge. And our 80 million users think we’re doing a pretty good job. So if you’re planning to spend time online and you regularly exchange files with friends, check us out,” reads a message accompanying the free download of AVG 9.0.

As is the case with all editions of the security solution from the 9.0 product lineup, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 is tailored to a variety of Windows releases. The security company revealed that AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 was designed to play nice with not just Windows XP and Windows Vista, but also the latest iteration of the Windows client, namely Windows 7.

Microsoft has released Windows 7 to manufacturing on July 22nd, and is currently just days away from making the final release of the operating system available to the general public. Although Windows 7 RTM will hit the shelves on October 22nd, 2009, AVG has delivered support for the platform since early on in the development stage when it offered customers an option to protect their machines running beta Build 7000 and Release Candidate (RC) Build 7100 of Vista’s successor.

AVG noted that AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 9.0 allows customers to: “surf, and search with confidence, while LinkScanner keeps you safe from harmful sites. Get online and offline protection from viruses, spyware, and other nasties. Enjoy consistently high-speed PC performance with our new enhanced virus scanner. Automatic updates keep your protection current.”
